Wild Dark Shore

Charlotte McConaghy

Flatiron Books

2025

Wild Dark Shore is a tale of survival, reclamation, and lifelong relationships. Charlotte McConaghy captures the spirit of a fragile planet in her hands, like mercury that is quick to slip through the readers fingers. However, her work engages the reader and challenges us.

The story begins in Antarctica where the world's largest seed bank holds the heirloom and source seeds for the planet. All is secure, or so we think until Rowan arrives. She is a woman with a past and a challenge for the motley crew that are the caretakers of the bank.

There is much to follow, waves of action and indecision. The references to climate change are obvious. The author does not indulge in sermons of purity or rambling moral superiority. There are human voices and human dilemmas to consider as the planet is at risk.
I recommend this book to those who look for finding relationships between characters and their bond to the Earth.
