Last One Seen

Crooked Lane Books

2025

Rebecca Kanner has woven a tale of wonder and loss amidst a river filled with currents and eddies for the reader.

'Last One Seen' is a thrill ride novel filled with characters masked by ambition, addiction and obsession. The voices of Justine, Claire, Eli, Amelia and Hannah (the protagonist) bounce off the walls of a university campus, the homes of wealthy alumni and desolate cabins far from anywhere.

The work details the challenges of mental illness and the hunger for success. There were times when any number of characters could have been guilty of murder. Greater still was the likelihood of multiple egomaniacs being false and thundering through life as outlined in this fast paced work.

Kanner has a wit that appears often; one example includes when Hannah is fighting for relevance and survival. She says, "I could be wearing Dolce and Gabbana, but instead, I turned a blanket into a dress because I wanted to be earthier. I'm taking the Bigfoot out of my carbon footprint."

I highly recommend reading this fast-paced gem-filled novel.
